  • Generally no adjusting needed when putting on

Baby Pouches Safety Guide

  • Your baby’s chin should never be “tucked in” touching his/her chest. Make sure you can place 2 fingers vertically between the chin and body.
  • You should always be able to see your baby’s face, make sure that his/her airwave is unobstructed.
  • Check with a doctor before using a pouch if your baby was born premature, had low birth weight, or has any health issues
  • Your baby’s neck and spine should remain straight. If his/her spine feels curved, reposition your baby in the pouch.

What is a Pouch for Babies?

A pouch sling is the simplest style of baby slings. It simply is a single large loop of fabric which has been creased to create a “pouch” for the baby. The pouch is slung over one shoulder and around the waist. If the baby is being carried in a traditional front cradle position, the baby will lie within the pouch similar to a hammock. If the child is old enough to sit, then the most popular carrying method is to have the baby’s behind sitting on the center seam of the pouch just over the baby wearer’s hip. Regardless of the carrying method, you’ll want to spread out the pouch over the shoulder to disperse the weight as evenly as possible. Also, be sure to switch soldiers frequently to prevent either shoulder becoming tired.

Making sure that your baby pouch fits properly is essential to wear your baby safely and comfortably. Be sure to follow the measuring instructions for your specific baby pouch carefully before purchasing. Also, if your partner is planning on wearing the pouch as well and you have significantly different body sizes, consider going with a ring sling instead. These provide a much greater degree of adjustability, so both of you can wear the same sling. But if you like to keep things simple, and either your partner has a similar body size to you, or won’t be wearing the sling, then a baby pouch is a great option!
