A baby ring sling simply consists of a cloth and 2 nylon or aluminum rings. Sometimes another material can be used for the rings, but the majority of ring slings today use one of these two materials, or on occasion some other metal for the rings. The cloth is then sewn on one side of the fabric to the two rings. The cloth then wraps around the wearer’s body by draping the rings over one shoulder in the front, and wrapping the fabric behind the back and around to the front just above the hip. The loose end of the fabric is then threaded though the 2 rings to create a tension stop, similar to some belt buckles.
The fabric is large enough for a child to sit or lie within the resulting pouch that is formed once the ring sling has been fastened over the shoulder. The child’s own weight then serves to increase the tension of the fabric threaded through the two slings. This causes the fabric to “lock” into place, preventing any slipping of the fabric between the rings.
Ring slings for babies come in a variety of styles and fabrics. Ring slings can be made of cotton fabrics, silk, linen, organic cotton, hemp, or decorative prints such as batik. The fabrics themselves can include intricate woven patterns, or stylish prints, all in a variety of colors. Frequently, the fabric portion of the sling may have a built in pocket for carrying extra diapers, or other items. Some slings come with padding provided in the fabric that goes over the shoulder, such as the maya wrap lighly padded sling.
