  • Why use a Baby Carrier?

Baby carriers frequently feel more “secure” to new parents who haven’t used a pouch or sling before. A baby carrier consists of the “pouch” where the child sits, then two straps go over each shoulder of the wearer, while two straps also wrap around the waist of the person wearing the carrier. This is a familiar position for most people because it is very similar to wearing a traditional hiking back pack, however, some baby carriers can also be worn on the stomach of the wearer.

Because the carrier consists of shoulder straps for each shoulder, as well as waist straps, the child’s weight is distributed much more evenly than a ring sling or baby pouch. This makes baby carriers very popular for parents who will be wearing their baby for long durations of time, such as on a hike, or a long afternoon at the mall.

Different baby carriers are designed for different ages, for instance, baby carriers that position the baby on the stomach of the wearer should be used for babies who can’t support their heads, however, if the baby can support their head on their own and weighs more than 20 lbs, a front carrier isn’t recommended because the additional weight can be harmful to the baby wearer’s back. Instead, the carrier should be worn on the back of the wearer.

As with any baby sling or carrier, be attentive to your baby’s needs. Check on him/her frequently and make sure that your baby’s head is supported and not hunched over with the chin resting on the body.
